Find eco-aware reuse groups near you.

What is a reuse group? It's a network where members can get rid of unwanted stuff and get one or two for free loosely based on the concept that one man's garbage is another's treasure. A web-based re-use network was popularized by FreeCycle, an online flea market where we can get useful stuff for free. Other well known re-use groups are FreeSharing and the ReUseIt network.

Yahoo has made it easier for us to find a local re-use group. Check out their world map here where groups are plotted. If there's none near where you live, why not start one? Either sign up your group with FreeCycle or create an online community where interested parties can join and contact other members.

There's no need to buy a domain or hosting for a quality bulletin board system, simply sign up and make one with the Invision Power Board Free. IPB is one of the 2 most popular commercial bulletin board scripts and is fairly easy to maintain and administer.

Reusing stuff is an attractive option in light of the gloomy economy and friendly to our environment too.

Thanks for a great tip. I did not know such groups exist and I found one literally down the street from my house. We are moving soon, and I know we will have a number of items that can be reused. Our group is tied into a women's shelter so the items will be used right away. Much better than a yard sale.

I love FreeCycle. We are within 20 miles of 3 different networks - of which I belong to all three. I've gotten clothes and garden plants so far and given away several things I was never going to use again. It's better than throwing them away. Craigslist is also a great place to ask for things for free or give things away. Last year I got over $300 worth of garden plants that I was able to share with all my relatives with Craigslist post and some elbow grease.

Thanks for sharing the information. Now, I just need to find someone to take away the old computer monitors that's been sitting in my garage for years.

@ Sahron

Hi!

Nice to hear from somebody who has used the system. Reusing and donating old stuff makes perfect sense. :D

Thanks.

@ Adam
